About FIRST
Founded in 1989, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen as a way to promote engineering, science, and technology through fun and exciting competitions. FIRST is a non-profit organization based in Manchester, New Hampshire, which fosters hands–on learning. Young people learn not only engineering and technology skills, but also self-confidence, communication, and leadership through the challenges FIRST gives students all over the world.
The FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) is a yearly challenge designed for high school students in which they receive a kit of parts and have only six weeks to build a robot designed to meet the year's challenges. Past competitions have included robots that can lift giant balls, race around tracks, and manipulate delicate game pieces. FRC is not only about the robots, though. In fact, the most prestigious prize, the Chairman's Award, is given to teams that embody Gracious Professionalism, who give back to their communities, who help other teams, and who ultimately improve the lives of others.
FIRST Scholarships
Many colleges and universities give scholarships to students on FIRST teams. These scholarships enable students to pursue careers in engineering, computer science, math, design, and aeronautics, among many others.
